Why Craniosacral work can benefit any health challenge
Milena Savic McRae
The basis of craniosacral work is in the understanding that every living being possesses an inherent source of knowledge and established effective mechanisms that are designed to guide the body in its natural process of development and growth. In this process it will ultimately always strive to achieve and maintain optimal health, looking to harmonise our relationship with our immediate and wider environment.
The natural mechanisms we are embracing are continually at work, every waking and resting hour and minute. However, the potential and rate at which the mechanisms are at work will depend on our levels of physical and mental activity and emotional stresses we are exposed to. It is easy to understand that a balance is always necessary, in every process that takes place in nature and likewise in the maintenance of our health. Periods of activity are offset by the times of rest and sleep, thus the wear and repair processes are in balance. This is most easy to relate to when we look at our physical activity. Less obvious are the strains coming from mental and emotional challenges although they equally require the necessary down-time and to be ‘digested’, leaving no residual overload and conflict. The real challenge comes from our modern lifestyle, with a magnitude of stimuli, often overwhelming for the body to process and fully return to the state of true balance.
While we can’t avoid the influence of our modern day environment, we can make conscious decisions to give our bodies the right conditions and opportunities to ‘press the reset button’. Engaging in exercise type that we enjoy, spending time in nature, meditating and fostering good relationships with family and friends are all important in achieving this goal. Immersing in a hobby that allows us to express our creativity and completely change the scenery in our focused minds, countering the tensions we may be holding over work, school and other challenges.
It becomes easy to see how she challenge arises from an imbalance of the wear and tear processes. The body doesn’t receive enough down-time or the periods of rest and repair are intermittent, superficial and incomplete. In case of emotional stresses, another critically important component is the ability to resolve the challenges coming from our environment over which we have no or only very limited control. Our point of view doesn’t seem to be understood and oftentimes just the need and fulfilment of the need to be understood is the very trigger in resolving the conflict.
This is where the true value of craniosacral work comes through. Craniosacral therapeutic process offers an ideal environment in which the body can ‘enter the healing zone’. Every aspect of the individual recognises the right conditions have been achieved to let go of the tension, feeling safe and supported, where no judgement is present, just an environment of true listening on the deepest level. Unusual physical expressions of the process may come forth in a form of involuntary body movements, muscle spasms and releases, tensions and pains coming to the surface and then releasing. Emotions and memories may become vividly alive, showing the very issues that the wholeness of who we are is spontaneously bringing to our awareness and using the inherent knowledge of how to resolve them on the conscious level. These may be at the core of many physical issues that were the initial driver that brought us to a craniosacral clinic.
During the craniosacral therapeutic process, the body is gently reminded of the condition and state of being that we would experience if there were no threats, challenges or urgency to achieve and prove ourselves. In this state, the body spontaneously aligns with the level of health and balance we enjoyed at the earliest stages of life, as far back as the life in the mother’s womb, where our every need was taken care of instantly and constantly. When the body remembers that state, every cell finds itself in the state of perfect health and a deep regenerative process takes place. Returning to that experience of perfect health on regular basis enables us enhance the natural healing mechanisms that are the ultimate healing force without who’s engagement, no true healing can take place or be maintained, regardless of external methods applied. Once we understand this on the conscious level, we are really heading in the right direction on our healing journey.
